Meet the Home Theatre Guru, Sonny DiFranco

Before he was old enough to drive, Sonny DiFranco was already an electronics whiz. As a child, he was that smart (nerdy?) kid in your neighborhood who made pocket money repairing stereo equipment and TVs, instead of delivering newspapers or mowing lawns.

After Sonny grew up, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard, where he gained world-class training and qualification in search and rescue operations, which proved not only exciting but also highly gratifying. After his stint in the service, Sonny took advantage of the G.I. Bill and formalized his knowledge in electronics with additional education, specialized training, and experience.

Over the past two-plus decades, Sonny has enjoyed various challenging positions in the electronics industry, and since 1997 has also been well known in the Austin area as “The Mac Guru,” helping Central Texas Macintosh computer owners and Mac-based businesses get the most out of their systems. He still enjoys Mac consulting work, and in-fact the two worlds have begun to merge in recent years as Sonny has experienced first hand, having installed multiple AppleTV and other network-streaming devices into clients’ home entertainment systems.

Home Theatre Enthusiast and Guru

A longtime enthusiast, Sonny developed a passion for enjoying high fidelity video and audio in his own home. After educating himself on basic calibration techniques, Sonny decided to share his knowledge and expertise with Austin area friends and customers.

About that same time, High Definition TV systems that once were limited to higher-income households (and the serious pro-level enthusiasts) became more affordable. As demand for HDTV systems increased, so did demand for quality…theater level quality. Consumers wished their televisions or projectors and surround-sound systems at home performed as well as they seemed to in the demo rooms at their local hi-fi and video store, where they may have first been exposed to high-definition pictures and sound.

To add to his knowledge and skills, Sonny obtained professional level certifications from THX Ltd., the founder of quality assurance programs for superior cinema presentation; the Imaging Science Foundation, a video quality standards organization that trains dealers and manufacturers worldwide, and helps design TV sets for the majority of major TV manufacturers; and the Home Acoustics Alliance (HAA), an alliance of independent audio/video professionals dedicated to the pursuit of “sonic greatness in the home entertainment experience.”

Further, you don’t need to own ultra high-end audio and video equipment. In my opinion, the environment, including seating position, speaker placement and display positioning, proper interconnect and set-up methods and, of course, calibration are all more important than the equipment itself, assuming a reasonable level of equipment capability.”
